Building Your Own Home Gym - August 22, 2007

Most serious strength athletes know the benefits of owning their own equipment. Not only does it make it convenient in terms of when you can train, it also cuts down on travel time to the gym leaving more personal time for things like reading this website. It's also cheaper in the long run, eliminating expensive gym membership fees and travel costs. In addition to all that, it also means that you'll never have to deal with idiots using the squat rack for curls or listen to uptight commercial gym workers tell you "No deadlifting," "Don't use chalk," or "Please put your pants back on."
That said, most of us have a full array of bars, weights, and miscellaneous equipment that we've acquired over the years. Most people don't know where to go about getting all of the standard equipment at a reasonable price, but I'm going to share a secret with you: We get our equipment when gyms close their doors for pennies on the dollar. We don't necessarily seek out gym closures, they seem to find us. Rather, people who know the owners seem to find us and tell us about them.
Now, through the magic of the internet, I bring all of you the same opportunity to purchase health club quality equipment at a fraction of the price. Earlier today, I received an email from friend and lightweight pro strongman, Ben Moore, informing me of an equipment sale going on in Kansas City. The email is copied and pasted below. I highly suggest that anyone in the KC area take advantage of this sale.
A good friend of mine is closing his gym in KC. He has a lot of very nice equipment for sale. Contact him if you are interested in any/all of it.

Can you do reviews of bad/gimmicky health equipment. What I'm most interested in are the ways it will probably hurt/fuck up you.
